Physical Therapy

First and foremost, I am a physical therapist. However, I look at physical therapy differently than some of my colleagues in the practice. I see physical therapy as the ultimate medicine for those seeking health, wellness, and quality of life. I am a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT), or, how I like to describe myself, I am a Doctor of Movement and Muscles. I do not prescribe medicine, I prescribe movement.

Our time together will be based on a very predictable pattern of rationale I believe is best suited to optimize human movement:

1. Address Pain - You cannot heal if you are in pain. We will work with hands on techniques such as hands on soft tissue massage, modalities such as ultrasound and electrical stimulation, stretching and range of motion exercise to improve symptoms.

2. Restore Optimal Range of Motion - Strengthening is a huge part of alleviating pain - we will get there! But first, we need to re-teach your body how to move through its largest range of motion. Reteach your muscles how to shorten and lengthen in order to allow your joints to glide smoothly. During this phase, we will continue soft tissue massage with greater emphasis on joint mobilizations as needed or stabilization training. We will learn how to stretch a muscle and use the new range of motion gained.

3. Strengthen and Stabilize - Range of motion is great, but you need to know how to use it! That is where strengthening and stabilization comes in. By progressively adding resistance, complexity of movement, or balance challenges your body learns how to work at rest and with activity. Additionally, balance of strength through coordination and body mechanics will help to prevent reoccurrence of pain.

4. Functional Training and Maintenance of New Normal - Throughout the entirety of our time together, I will assign you activities to be completing outside of therapy. These activities, named your Home Exercise Program (HEP) will be my best guess of what you can do between sessions to maintain or enhance our rehabilitation journey.
